Second Sight’s legacy product, Argus® II, approved by the FDA for the treatment of retinitis pigmentosa, has been implanted in 350+ individuals worldwide, restoring functional, artificial vision by renewing light perception and transforming the daily experience in the majority of individuals.

Second Sight's Argus II System provides electrical stimulation that bypasses the defunct retinal cells and stimulates remaining viable cells inducing visual perception in individuals with severe to profound RP. Argus II is intended to provide electrical stimulation of the retina to induce visual perception in blind individuals with retinitis pigmentosa and has the capacity to offer life-changing visual capabilities to those currently unable to see anything except, at best, extremely bright lights. The device, called the Argus II Retinal Prosthesis System, was developed by a California-based company called Second Sight Medical Products. The Argus II has been used to restore some level of visual perception to hundreds of individuals with severe retinitis pigmentosa — a disease that affects one in 5,000 people. The Argus® II is a second-generation epiretinal, micro-electrode array retinal prosthesis developed and sold by Second Sight Medical Products. It recently was approved for marketing in both Europe (2011) and the United States (2013), being the first device to gain that distinction. The Argus II was developed in-house through more than a decade of focused R&D efforts.

Implanting the Argus II is a well -established surgery, typically taking only a few hours. The procedure is performed by an experienced retinal surgeon, with Second Sight technicians available for your support. Once implanted, the Argus II implant sits in and around the back of the eye and is not visible to others. The Argus II restores the sense of sight with advanced bioelectronic technology. Commonly referred to as the “bionic eye,” the ophthalmic device is a retinal implant system (Images A & C) that consists of an eyeglass mounted camera and an implanted 60 electrode retinal stimulator.
